Sustainability: from materials to packaging.
Love the planet.
As an artist, there are endless crafts and materials you can use to make art. But the one thing that has always been fundamental to me is making sure that what I make is as earth friendly as possible.
For years, I made mixed media and installation pieces that used repurposed materials. This way I was never adding to the amount of trash, but only giving one more life to things already destined for a landfill. And previous to this, as an interior designer, I focused my practice on sustainable design: minimal with the use of planet friendly materials.
Now, what I love about pottery is that my hands are in the actual earth. Clay can easily be recycled during the making process, so there can be very little waste. Each step of the way, I consider my effect on the planet (perhaps to a manic fault as I collect and recycle even the water from my humidifier and rain)! The pieces I make are functional, yet exist as works of art accessible to everyone. They will last for a lifetime and beyond.
BettyKimArt is small batch enough that I can use primarily recycled/repurposed packaging materials. I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to be able to reuse the packaging I receive in the mail!
